Effects of Weight Management Program in Psychiatric Inpatients

Abstract

|
Objectives£ºThe main objective was to assess the efficacy of a weight management program designed for inpatients who were diagnosed as schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder in Yongin Mental Hospital. The effects of the weight management program were also assessed with regard to quality of life, Nurses¡¯ Observation scale for Inpatient Evaluation (NOSIE), self-esteem and laboratory data.
Methods£º Forty inpatients were enrolled in a 12-session weight management program. Twenty inpatients were allocated to an intervention group for weight management program. Twenty inpatients were allocated to a control group. The study was conducted form March 7, 2008, to May 25, 2009.
Results£º We found significant differences in weight, abdominal circumstance, BMI change from baseline to endpoint between the intervention and control groups respectively(p=0.001, p=0.011, p=0.001). Also NOSIE and selfesteem showed (p=0.02, p=0.001), but in Quality of life and laboratory data, the difference was not significantly statistical.
Conclusion£º The weight management program was effective in terms of weight reduction in inpatients with schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder. In addition, such a weight management program improved self-esteem and ward behavior in inpatient with schizophrenia or shcizoaffective disorder. Additional follow up studies are needed to validate maintenance of weight reduction.
